I recommend wireless internet in this case. Saves trailing cables around the apartment. Make sure both computers can receive wireless internet though,
You can use a wireless modem (Verizon furnished one with our DSL subscription). Or, you can do as I did, install CAT-5 line from a jack near the modem (in one bedroom) to a jack near the computer (in the other bedroom) and run a CAT-5 local cable from the modem to the one jack, and a local cable from the other jack to the other computer Ethernet jack (may be labeled LAN).
You can get CAT-5 cable from HomeDepot. It costs 26ยข per foot from my local store, and the jacks are less than $5 each. They come with peel and stick backs and screws.
If you have laptops, which would make it wirless network, i suggest you guys buying a linksys wireless router. The person installing the internet service won’t help you install the router, but’s simple. All you need to do, is to take the Ethernet cable and plug it in the router, and your ready to go. Go to control panel>netwrok connection>wireless network >view wirless network> chose linksys and connect. Now i suggest you guys getting a SSD. A security code for your router. So go to this website > 198.168.1.1 > username > (leave it blank ) >password :admin. After that go under security. Now over there you could type in a word and it gives you bunch of numbers, or you could make your own 10 digit number and your security code. Make sure you take a note on it, otheriwse you won’t be able to connect to the internet after 3 mintes.
I would suggest buying a wireless router after getting the Internet cable modem installed. You’ll also need a wireless adapter for both computers. If you have one of the newer laptops or desktops, it probably has one already built in. You might want to check with Mediacom and ask whether they supply wireless routers. If not, you can get what you want from one of the better electronic supply stores such as Best Buy or Staples. WalMart sells the equipment; however, they are really shy on tech support. So unless you have experience in setting up a home network I would recommend not shopping at WalMart. If you purchase the equipment from Best Buy, you can probably have their Geek squad come out to your apartment to set it up as part of the purchase option.
