What Is The Maximum Distance of A Linksys WRT160N Wireless-N Ultra RangePlus Broadband Router?

Denver Designer asked:

I am purchasing a MacBook within a few weeks for school and I was planning on purchasing a Linskys WRT160N Wireless-N Ultra RangePlus Broadband Router for my home. What is the maximum distance it can reach? Can it go more than 200 feet?

I set up a wireless network for someone and they provided that router. It was in a newer construction house and it was setup in the basement corner. The third floor of the other corner was where the signal had to reach for a computer. It got one bar on this computer but it held its connection. It was a good 200-250 feet away, maybe more.

Wireless signals are affected by various things, such as temperature and location. The wi-fi signal can be reflected by walls when they hit at an angle, and the material of the wall can affect it as well.

As long as you place the router in a good location, you should be able to get a signal anywhere in your house. If you want to maximize the number of bars, you’ll have to play with the router’s location.

I once placed my router ina bad position. Between the router and my brother’s computer were two doors (parallel to each other and 45 degrees to the line between the computer and router). It was annoying because my brother had connectivity problems…at least one door had to be open for him to get a stable signal. Ieventually moved the router a couple of feet higher (mounted it on the wall), and the issue was resolved.
