Kapil asked:
What is a T1 cable?…you know, the one that goes from a CSU/DSU, IAD or other CPE to a PBX or a router? How is it different from a 568A or 568B Ethernet cable? Do most implementations use a straight or crossover T1 cable?

T1 is three times faster and cost more
I would guess it’s transmitted over long distances on fiber optic cable, and that they just cap the speed at 1.5mbps (T1 speed). My office has T1 (a newspaper), and they still use ethernet cables (TIA 568) to connect us to the main server/router/wiring closet/whatever. TIA 568 is just what plugs into your computer and to the router. It’s not the whole length of the network.
568A or B is T1 or Cat5 network cable, 568A and B just refer to the type of shielding the wire uses which is not that big of a deal for normal use.The fastest available is Cat6e but that is for Gigabyte connections which are not available for home use. 20MB/sec is about as fast as they offer right now in the US…we are not as lucky as Europe and Asia who have 50MB/sec and faster internet service available. Normal Cat5e is rated up to 100MB/sec which you will not surpass unless you are working in a government building or something. Crossover cable is meant for directly connecting two computers together like system linking two Xboxs together and should not be used to connect to a router as it will not work. The cable has it’s rating printed on it and just make sure it says Cat5e and do NOT use Crossover Cable.
There is no such thing as a “T1 cable”. T1 is the service your WAN connects on. 568A or B is just the term for the type of cable you are using: A=crossover cable & B=straight through.
Here’s a link if you want to check out the differences between the cables and their pinouts:
Most T1′s I use to install used a basic 568B CAT5 pre-made cable that came with the CSU/DSU (Adtran, Cisco, etc…).
