How do I setup a Linksys router with an optimum online modem so that I can use internet on multiple PCs?

pkst2004 asked:

Hi experts! I have optimum online at my home and, of course their, modem. I want to use it with multiple PCs and also make it wireless internet because I also have one laptop. I have a linksys router. I just do not know how to do that. Do I just connect the modem and the router through an ethernet cable and connect the PCs by ethernet cables from router to PCs, or do I have to configure the modem and the router fitst? If yes, then how can I do that? Thanks a lot. Please reply soon.

    WOw, This might be long.

Well First off, make sure you do have internet access, or this will not work everything must be turned off. Connect the Ethernet wire from the Modem to the Linksys. The Port should say Internet in your Linksys box.

    2. on Port 1 on Linksys box, connect the Ethernet wire to your PC
    3. on Port 2 on Linksys box, connect the Ethernet wire to your other PC.

4.Turn on your modem, then Linksys, then PC

5.Click on your web Browser (IE7 or Firefox, etc…)

    6. Type in

    User Name: Leave Blank
    Password:admin (in lower case)

You should be directed to the linksys setup page.

7.Under the setup tab, click on MAC address Clone sub Tab

8.Click on “enable” and Click on the clone button after. Click Save Settings when Done.

–This will clone a linksys IP Address to multiple computers and all will have Internet access with no problems. Thats It for wired computer, now lets go wireless.

    Wireless:
Go to Wireless Tab and click on the Basic Wireless Sub Tab

Set the routers’ mode to MIXED
Rename the wilreless network name or SSID to (anything you like)

You can set the channel to 1,9,11

Set the Wireless broadcast to enable

    Click Save Settings.

    ***Now to Secure your Wireless***
From the wireless tab click wirless security sub tab.

For the security mode, click the drop down arrow select WEP

Set the default transmit key to 1

Set the WEP encryption to 64 bits 10 hex digits.

Do not type anything on the Passphrase box. DO NOT hit the GENERATE Button.

Type in ten digit numbers on key1 (i.e 10 digit phone number, no spaces in between) Take note of the number you typed in in key 1, that is your network key

    Save Settings

Now go to your home page. You should have internet access.

If by any chance you don’t, make sure your computer is set on automatic.

    Start> control Panel>network and internet connections>network connections>-Right Click-on Local Area connection>Properties

Click on Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) Then Click Properties Tab

    on the General TAB

Make Sure you click on Obtain an IP Address Automatically

    and

    Obtain DNS Server Automatically

    Click on Alternate Configuration TAB

Click on Automatic Private IP Address

    Restart your PC

    Everything should work.

    Thats it.
