How can I find out what the fastest broadband speed I can actualy get is?

Bob asked:

So there are pleanty of services offering 20 meg broadband or 50 Meg but is there a site that can tell me the actual maximum my line can handle?

In other words I’m not looking for the speed that I’m currently getting, I’m looking for the speed I would actualy get in ideal conditions if I upgraded to a 20 or a 50 meg package for example?

    highspeed internet providers

If you are getting your internet from the cable company you can just call them and give them your address and they will be able to tell you what is the highest speed in your area. You can do the same thing with any company providing broadband.

First you will need to check which providers service your area.

Cable providers are generally able to offer higher speeds than ADSL providers (via your telephone line).

But it sounds like you are referring to ADSL via your current telephone line. If you call a service provider they will be able to advise you the maximum speed your line can handle based on your distance from your local exchange and the equipment installed there. Also note that the internal wiring in your home and other equipment can affect broadband speeds.
