   you need a phone line for dial up or DSL, cable uses something different

   the phone line cord connects to the modem, and then connects to a *wireless* router, which then wirelessly transmitts data to the wireless network card on your laptop

   most wireless routers are a combination of a router AND a modem, but you should double check that this the case before you buy one. if you buy a plain router that does not also operate as a modem you will need to have to attach a modem to it.

   IT DEPENDS
   if u have ur internet comeing from a phone line socket u can get wireless routers that have a model build in ( GET A ADSL ROUTER ( IT HAS A BUILT IN MODEM)

   Yep yep. The modem hooks to your cable. The modem is typically supplied by the cable provider when they hook you up for internet. Once they hook you up, you have to purchase a router if you intend to pick up the internet signal on your laptop. Otherwise, when they hook up your modem, you’ll have to hook your laptop up directly with a cable directly between the modem and the laptop. You won’t need a phone line.

   All in all, don’t worry about the modem, that’s part of the install. You want to start looking at routers like Linksys. And (write this down) once you get your router, be sure to secure it with a WEP or other people can steal your internet and worse. You can find more about that if you research routers. Linksys is a good place to look too.

   You need both. There are wireless routers on the market that are fairly cheap. Wal-mart sells them.
