I want to use a crossover ethernet cable to share internet between two computers, however upon searching the internet it says programs such as msn messenger may not work. Can anyone shed some light on this, whether this is correct or not? any additional advice would also be appreciated!

highspeed internet service
Will work just fine. I used to do this at the house back in the day when i had dialup. You are just sharing internet, not corporate protocols. Internet is internet. The easiest (but not cheapest) way would just get a router. Routers have internal hardware firewalls and stuff that makes internet more secure and you can hardwire like 7 computers to it, even more if you use wireless. You shouldnt have a problem though, fine tuning the settings can get annoying though.
